Wisdom of The Ancestors -- February 19-21
Join Barbara Biziou and Lewis Mehl-Madrona for a weekend of exploration into the often neglected past of our ancestors, creating possibilities for inviting them back into our modern lives.

Going beyond the obvious roles that the ancestors played in contributing DNA to our genetic code and building the world in which we live, we believe that our ancestors can still enlighten and support us.
Most indigenous cultures honor the ancestors. In Asia, families build ancestral shrines. Native Americans and Africans make place at the table for departed ancestors. Mediums purport to communicate with the recently departed.
We may also carry the unresolved life patterns of our ancestors. These can be a source of personal discomfort. We re-enact these patterns unless we consciously address them and heal them.

In this workshop, we suggest that the spirits of the ancestors are real and that we can learn to communicate with them, to receive their guidance, and to use their presence for healing. We need their wisdom to guide us just as ancient cultures did. Without them, we lose our perspective on the ages. We could fall into ecological and personal disaster.

Friday, February 19, 2010: Introduction, 6:30 to 9:30 pm
We will explore how the cultures from which we originate viewed ancestors, drawing from our mutual backgrounds and the backgrounds of our audience. Barbara will bring her Jewish background and Lewis will bring his Native American, Scottish, and French backgrounds to the table. We will observe how ancient and indigenous cultures respected and venerated the ancestors; and how the ancestors enriched their lives. We will consider the difference between ancestor worship and respect. How ancestors represent archetypal forms in our lives. Following our introductory and orienting discussions, we will do a guided imagery exercise to journey to meet an ancestor or two and will dialogue with these ancestors to find out why they wished to meet and what they can contribute to our moderate lives.

Saturday, February 20, 2010: Exploring our Ancestors, 10:00am to 5:30pm
We will begin with a Talking Circle to explore dreams that emerged from the activities of the previous evening. Then we will explore further dialogue with ancestors and will practice receiving their guidance and channeling their wisdom. We will learn Native American approaches to channeling ancestral wisdom and will practice these skills. Then we will make a mask for the channeled ancestor who wishes to join us. Together we will plan a ceremony to enact on the next day that will honor our ancestors, request healing, and provide healing for one another, assisted by the ancestors. Bring objects from your past, your ancestors, or representative of your ancestors to create an altar.

Sunday, February 21, 2010: Ceremony for Honoring the Ancestors and Receiving Healing, 10am to 2pm
We will enact the ceremony that we created on Saturday, using elements from each of our cultures and ancestors of origin. We will honor our ancestors, request healing, and give healing for each other, assisted by the ancestors, using the masks and altars created on Saturday. We will end with a feast. Bring foods to share that were loved by your ancestors.
